Design Wall Monday-March 24, 2014

It is really good to be sewing again!  I did finish the Top of the Month that was due this past Thursday. It was Arctic Flame and you got to see the flame part for a few weeks.  Now the finished quilt.  The yellow is a little bright and the blue dots do not show up in the picture.  That yellow is also in the theme fabric but is very muted.
I  finished cutting the pieces for this next Top of the Month.  It is "Wistful" by Villa Rosa. It uses a jelly roll and 1.5 yards of background fabric. The jelly roll I am using is called Chance of Flowers by Moda. Maybe next Monday some of it will be on the wall!
Hard to get a picture without the can lights showing up on the granite.!  I do so love the granite island-wonderful for cutting!!!!!

As for the kitchen, still waiting for the hardware to be put on the cabinets. The trim guy has really been busy. Am hoping this week. Yes, I am still putting some things away and then moving them again to a new location! But it is all getting better and we are loving it. Now on to getting more of the downstairs painted! Then we are finished for a little while. The yard is needing some much needed work. Think we may have lost some plants this past winter.

I also got backs together for 2 quilts and they will be going to the quilter this week, so I can count that too!

Stash Report-Week 11, 2014

The kitchen took all my time this week. Once again my numbers haven't changed ! Maybe there is hope for some different numbers in the next report!
My time has been taken up with not only getting the kitchen back in order but also cleaning the rest of the downstairs where we lived for 2.5 months.  Getting rid of the fine dust and rearranging.  Not being done just right tho as we will be having the living  and dining rooms painted early April. We have some high ceilings in the entry way so we will not be tackling that job either! But I can get it to looking halfway decent again!
I have a new mantra for this week  I will SEW!

Design Wall-March 10, 2014

My wall never changed this week. Still the same as last Monday
There will be more to show next week!
We are on the finishing process of the kitchen-any corrections that need to be made, a
little caulking here and there, a little touch up with the paint and a few drawers to come back once they have been lacquered. By Tuesday afternoon all should be finished and maybe by then the building inspector will also have been here to sign off on the job. If you have been following along, I posted new parts 1-3 last night.

Kitchen Update-March 9, 2014-Part 3

By no means will this be the final resting place for the majority of the "stuff"! But I
am trying to get as much unpacked as possible before recycle day on Tuesday. the counters are a little cluttered at this point and there are things going in the upper cabinets that will eventually go in the pull out drawers in the lower cabinets.  So I am unpacking and Galen is helping to put things away

Yes, more dishes.  And I know these will be recognized by some of you! Several of us came back from Taiwan with the same set.  And being a set of Chinese dishes we of course all bought the all the different pieces that made up the set.  I have service for 12 but bought extra plates and some of the other dishes we would be using everyday. After all, would take a trip back to Taiwan to replace a broken plate! On the other hand I do know at least 3 other friends who have the same dishes!

Not quite as much paper as our packers used when we moved back to the states. Some day I will show some of those pictures!

A little idea of the layout of the sink side of the island.
A double sink, then the dishwasher.  A pull out then for garbage-in front, recycle behind. Then a set of small drawers. On the side of the island facing the family room are 3 large cabinets with shelving where I can store things that aren't used as much.  Big serving platters, the god china etc. Once we get this all figured out, it will be great.

Kitchen update-March 8, 2014- part 2

We had plans to get much more done Friday evening.  That was the plan anyway.  Our neighbors stopped in to see the new kitchen as they were heading out of town for Spring break this week.  After they left we went to a little Italian Restaurant for a leisurely dinner and a bottle of wine. Then we went to the Container store to look at a few things.  Came home and both collapsed in the recliner and that was it for the night!
Saturday morning I put a few things away before people got here to do a little more finishing work.  The painter was going to spray the drawers with a coat of lacquer however it was rainy and he didn't want to do it in the house. So he took the 8 drawers with him to do them at home.He will bring them back on Tuesday, touch up a few other places then as well. Greg also has the plumbers back that day as he isn't happy with the plumbing job under the laundry room sink. And we are still waiting for the building inspector. He should be here Monday or Tuesday to sign off on the job. I did get started on unpacking boxes of dishes.
Just a few of them

Since they had been packed away for a few months they needed to be at least rinsed off!

Yes, the boxes were pretty well marked.

Getting some of the furniture arranged

And the girls are happy to be back in the family room!

Kitchen Update- March 7, 2014 Part 1

I haven't been keeping up with this for the past few days.  Been busy! The dishwasher we had ordered - was discontinued by the manufacture. They were going to send the newer model.  Didn't come as of this past Wednesday. We got on the phone with the people we had ordered from to see if they could come up with a solution.  We could either get a loaner that they would install and then install the new one when it came in or they had a floor model of one similar to the one we ordered and would give it to us at the same price. It was a brand we had never heard of-Asko.  Checked them out on line and went to look at it on Thursday.  It is a Swedish brand and has more features than the one I had originally ordered.  We decided on it and it was delivered on Friday.  We also had our instruction session with Paul and Greg on the  upkeep of the granite, the back splash and the travertine floor. Told us what to use and gave it to us. Glad i didn't buy anything for the care of granite!! Had been looking in the stores but also knew they were going to tell us what to use.
How to tell if the surfaces need to be sealed again-put an ice cube on it. If it beads-it is sealed. If it puddles it needs to be sealer again. The one guy has had his granite island in for 8 years and still has not had to seal it again.  You mix a little bit of this with water and wipe or mop away!
Now on to a few pictures.

The dumpster was gone-6:45 AM Friday. We have our driveway back!

Much sturdier lazy susan

Looking from the kitchen.

Loved the reflection on the granite

Furniture not arranged but you get an idea

Starting to put a few things away.

Stash Report-week 10-2014

The kitchen took all my time this week. Numbers haven't changed ! Maybe there is hope for some different numbers in the next report!  On the bright side I do have a kitchen-now to figure out where everything should go!

Kitchen Update-Week 9-Tuesday

On the final few days of the remodel.  Yesterday the AC people were here to finish the vent work for the kitchen fan/vent over the cook top.  The sheet rock people were also here to do some patching.  Today the sheet rock people were back doing the texture touch up on the walls. And the cabinet guy was here from about 9 to 4:30 installing shelving, aligning the cabinet doors. He will be back in a few days to finish. He wasn't happy with two of the doors and another gave him some problems.  But I can start getting an idea as to what I have for shelves and where the pull out drawers will also be placed.
But first this is how we started the day.
30 degrees and rain makes some pretty shrubbery coated in ice!

Now on to the kitchen!
Texturing a seam in the ceiling.

Danny working his way around the kitchen.

The vent pipes are now covered!

Cabinet about the refrigerator needs doors redone. The other
opening is where the lazy susan will be.

Painter will be here in the morning.

Design Wall Monday-March 3, 2014

I finished another 16 string blocks this past week.

Today I went to my LQS and picked out the fabric for this Top of the Month. Came home
and got to use the new granite island as my cutting table!  Good reason to keep it uncluttered! Besides I love looking at it!
And then spent some time sewing!
The pattern this time around is Arctic Flame by Villa Rosa
All I got done today. We picked up Dad and went out for my Birthday Dinner. Not a very pleasant evening to be going for dinner-the temperatures dropped quickly from 60's to 40's to 30's and freezing and raining by the time we left for dinner. Thought we were living back up north again! No colder there! I think every one every where is getting tired of this winter!

More week in the kitchen this week-just about finished! Cleaning crew in tomorrow to get rid of the dust, wipe down the cabinets.  Not sure when they will be back to finish the cabinets off  but sometime this week! I am loving it!

Stash Report-week 9-2014

Not much accomplished this week when it came to using fabric!  Made my string blocks for the next swap group. However, I also found some really cute sale fabric for the back of the last top of the month I made. Maybe with the kitchen finishing up I'll soon have more time to sew!

Kitchen Remodel-Week 8-Friday

Friday was a busy day. Home Depot had called Thursday evening and said the delivery window would be between 8 and 12.  At 6:55 the phone rang (yes we were up having coffee) first delivery had been cancelled -OK if we are there in about 30 minutes! They arrived at 7:30.  First in and hooked up - the washer and dryer.
Next came the new refrigerator
Easiest to bring that is around the back and through the French Doors

Tight fit on the other side of the island. LG recommends not taking their handles off.
The Home Depot guys were just about finished when the electricians arrived at 8.
I needed to do a little shopping so went to the store and came home to this.
The people from Factory Builders were here installing the vent, the
oven and the gas cook top. Galen s watching the work going on.
Electrician working on the electric for the wall oven, our contractor Greg is cutting the
hole for the vent pipe. The other two are getting the cook top ready to drop into place.
The dishwasher will be coming in about 10 days.

Our girls on the outside looking in!
They are as ready for thing to get back to normal as we are!
We did actually stand at the island and have a late lunch after everyone left.

As much as I would love to start putting things back in the cabinets that won't be until sometime late next week. The cleaning crew will be in on Monday. And the rest of the cabinets doors should go on, drawers put in place, shelving installed and hardware also put on. I think that also happens on Monday. The painter will also be back next week. But we can at least move things from the refrigerator on the porch to the one in the kitchen. No more late night or early morning excursions to the porch to get something from the fridge!!!

I promised a better picture of the front entry way now that it has been done. Looks much better than the brick facing.
