End of Week 12-August 27, 2016

It has been a week of small projects and touch ups. But there is light at the end of the tunnel as they say. Before I show pictures from this week I want to include two from last week. The railing installers had said they had never had to do a corner like this before. Now they can say they have!

We pretty much spent Monday and Tuesday going through some things here and getting ready for the movers on Wednesday. But we did have Peter here Tuesday morning to install trim on some areas on the upstairs floor.

Then later that day Peter and Greg put up the grab bars, towel bars etc in the 2 baths.

On Wednesday the movers met Galen shortly after 7 AM at our storage unit to load up furniture. It was a little bit of a challenge as we had 2 units-one from when we moved
dad out of his apartment last November and then ours for the remodel. There was somethings in each coming here. I stayed home as we figured with both of us there it would be more of a hassle! Galen and the guys got here about 9:30.

Not much left in the truck by the time I took this picture. Great group of guys. They left about noon after beds and all were put together. We spent the rest of Wednesday and Thursday unpacking.
One of the bedrooms was designated for boxes

On Friday Lynn was back with his son to put trim on our steps going to the second floor. Also put some trim on the deck ceiling.

If you remember earlier pictures there was a little white showing in the front of the steps. Greg got a piece of trim, stained it to match. The guys put it in on Friday.

The painter was here in the morning and covered walls etc around the railings.

He was back late Friday to put the first coat of paint on the railings.
While he was working inside we got to try out the deck. Tilly seems pretty comfortable but only for pictures!
Since it was National Dog Day they both got to try out the new chairs.
Then back to their beds so we could try out the new chairs!
We had can lights installed for when we really want light, but also bought fans with lights. Really nice and mellow with the fan lights on.

The painter was back this morning to put the second coat of paint on the railing. The first coat is still tacky so he will be back tomorrow to do the second coat, paint the trim on the deck and any touch ups we need from moving things around.

End of week 11-remodel update

We are down to those final items which take time. The electricians were here on Monday getting the lights and fans hooked up on the new deck.

On Tuesday the shower glass people were here. They got the big mirror back up on the wall in the  big upstairs bath and also did a little work on the shower doors. They needed a little adjusting. Wednesday was an off day. The railing people wanted to come on Thursday afternoon to install the railings on the stairs. However we had some furniture being delivered on Thursday afternoon so that was not going to work. Furniture delivered Thursday afternoon and the railings were installed today!
                                                                      Preparation
This section was fairly quick to install
Figuring out an angle at the turn on the steps

Came out to see how they were making out-no railing! Actually they took it out so they could do the welding outside.
All in place now and waiting to be painted in the next week or so!

Galen put the shelving back up in the closet in my old sewing room. I can start getting that organized.

We have the movers lined up to deliver our things from storage on the 24th. (Wednesday). It will take them 2 days of painting the railing. When they do that they will also touch up any mishaps from moving furniture. Probably this coming week there will be a little floor work-molding, grab bars on the showers, and a pane of window glass that needs replacing. Also the mason will be here on Monday to fix a brick on the outside that was damaged when they were working on the deck.
We are getting close to the finish line!

On the weather front we had 6 inches of rain starting last Saturday and ending pretty much on Wednesday. More however is in the forecast for the weekend.

Remodel-week 11-Sunday part 2

The painters got here Thursday morning and went right to work taping and masking off areas. That in itself is a job and then factor in the hottest days of the year do far!
One spent time on the deck boards the other guy on the railings
After they left we blocked off the deck from our girls. Didn't want them running up on it to come in the house. Since we couldn't use the deck we had to take them out the side door and into the yard that way.
Took this picture Friday morning before the painters arrived. You can see the wood ceiling and not to mention how a fresh coat of white paint makes everything look better!

By noon on Friday the deck was finished. I think the guys were glad they were done with the outside  work. We do have shade in the back but that only can do so much when it is 100+ outside!

After lunch they started inside.
Lots of taping. Good thing they use 3M tape!
First coat going on the railings. This is the smelly stuff. Oil base enamel; but it is the stuff that should last!
One coat on all the railings. We opened up a window or two and had all the fans going. We went out for dinner. By the time we got back it wasn't bad in the house. The painters will be here Saturday and Sunday to finish everything.

We were able to start using the deck on Saturday
Getting rid of the paint smell on Saturday afternoon. A window open in the living room

The girls are liking the new bigger deck. they think it is their playground now
We managed to get a table and chairs on to it. Before I could move the chairs back under the porch roof so we could sit and watch it rain the skies opened and it poured.
But now we know, the water does bead up when the deck gets wet! A little over 2 inches of much needed rain fell. More in the forecast, but I am never confident of those until we see it actually rain! Painters here this morning and probably most of the day. Monday the electrician will be here putting up the lights and fans on the deck. The shower glass guy here to some tweaking on the doors. Still waiting on one more upstairs window that needed to be replaced-the seal broke. And we aren't sure when the stair railing and hand rail will be installed. They are very busy. The end is in sight!

Remodel Week 11-Sunday-part 1

I took a break from writing updates last week. Monday the guys were busy with other jobs. Tuesday, the deck guys did get here and were able to finish up the deck. Wednesday our trim carpenter was here along with the painters.

Our steps did give our trim guy a small challenge.
The original treads were not the standard 12" in size. For the new ones they needed to put a facing board on the riser. think I mentioned that in an earlier post. There went the original plan for the waterfall molding. Plus all risers are not created equal in height, at least in this house! And of course there was "what to do at the bottom?"
Greg thought about it for a while and came up with a solution.
We left him to work his magic and we took off for a late lunch at Marble Falls
We had to make our usual stops along the way. The dam at Lake Buchanan.
The Federal Fish Hatchery at Inks Lake. Hardly a cloud in the sky, but then it was over 100!
There is also a bird blind at the hatchery where you can sit and watch. While we were there a black chin hummingbird came into the feeder. Galen got several really good pictures of him.

When we got back Greg had left and the painters were pretty much ready to get started staining the deck. They had painted the outside of the doors and stained the ceiling.
Getting ready for Thursday!

Will do this one in 2 parts. More pictures to follow!

Remodel Week 9 Saturday

Today was set aside for work on the stairs. Peter and Greg got here about the same time this morning to plan Peter's attack and the supplies needed.
Peter had his saws set up outside

they decided that the old tread needed to come off and be replaced 1/2 inch plywood on top and on the risers 2 x 8

All set now for the new wood
the bottom 2 steps had a few angles that needed to be cut

View from the top!

Looks like Peter will be back tomorrow to finish the steps. That way we should be able to stay on schedule.
